With both record new car sales and UK production levels announced over the summer, the motor industry in general - and the fleet market in particular - seems to be in rude good health as we head towards the final quarter of the year. What better time for MT to check out the latest developments in and around (and even slightly beyond) the company car world?

Our top feature takes a look at the controversial subject of fleet telematics (p54). Soporific moniker notwithstanding, the technologies involved are real eye-openers. Routes, speed, driver behaviour and fuel efficiency can now all be remotely monitored and optimised back at fleet HQ, thanks to slick proprietary systems, and the fact that so many new cars are now connected to the internet as standard.

What started out a few years ago as expensive bespoke tech for equally expensive HGVs is now increasingly affordable, and popular, at sales force and executive level. White-collar company drivers might not always appreciate being the subject of Big Brother's beady eye in this way, but they better get used to it - anything that offers such impressive cost-savings is here to stay.
