IN OUR PROFILE OF Hillary Clinton in the February 2011 issue, our Washington, D.C., correspondent Kerry Eleveld noted Clinton's speech to State Department employees in which she remarked that "gay rights are human rights." But several comments on Advocate.com and our Facebook page expressed speculation as to whether Secretary Clinton's stated views on marriage equality (she favors civil unions but does not support same-sex marriage) are truly her feelings on the matter. "Bill Clinton is open with his support for gay marriage now because it doesn't hurt him," wrote one reader. "President Obama and Hillary Clinton, I believe, are both secretly on our side when it comes to marriage; however, the public simply isn't there yet. It would be silly for either of them to support gay marriage openly at a time when it is still unpopular and doesn't have a chance in hell of becoming law nationwide.... I don't hold it against either of them." Others took a harsher view, including this commenter: "What a hypocrite. She stands by her assertion that gay rights should be decided state by state. Worried about queer kids hanging themselves and being bullied to death? …
