Our February/March issue featured the annual list of Gayest Cities in America, which went on to be the most-viewed story on Advocate.com this year and sparked the ire--and appreciation--of readers across the country. Even our current cover girls, Tegan and Sara Quin, found themselves engrossed in the controversial list declaring Tacoma, Wash., the gayest city in America.

"No offense to LGBT people in Tacoma, but this is a crock," wrote one incensed reader. "And Whole Foods and Pottery Barn? If that's your definition of gay, the Advocate editorial staff is a bunch of mall-walkers."

Critiquing the criteria for establishing the gayest cities--including out elected officials, transgender and bisexual support groups, roller derby leagues, and concerts by Scissor Sisters, Uh Huh Her, Girl in a Coma, and the cast of Glee--some readers worried an undercover rightwing homophobe might have infiltrated The Advocate's staff. "I think this article must have been written by Focus on the Family," wrote one reader.

"We don't allow the religious right to reduce us to a parody of what our lives are all about," wrote another. …
