Contributor Chris Richey's essay on the failings of Tyler Perry's movie Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor didn't address the film from an aesthetic perspective, but a moral one. His assertion that the adulterous characters are punished with an HIV diagnosis invited reader response. Alex Garner, program coordinator at the National Minority AIDS Council commented, "When stigma is used as a prevention tactic it is counterproductive and actually prevents people from getting tested or accessing care. It's time we took a long hard look at our relationship to HIV so that we can respond with evidence, thoughtfulness, and compassion. The goal is to go from stigma to empowerment. Thanks for demonstrating that, Chris." The piece sparked a dialogue between commenters on whether reducing stigma is an effective tool to increase testing and safe sex practices, or whether fear-based campaigns are more effective.
