This column typically features stories of armed self-defense involving humans defending themselves against people who act like animals, but this news story out of British Columbia shows that you need to be prepared for animals that act like animals as well. CTV News reported on August 10 about a family that had a grizzly bear break in to their home.

The family woke up early to the sound of their dog, Sid, frantically barking. The wife went to investigate and discovered a giant 15-year-old grizzly bear in the kitchen eating a bucket of pet food. The bear had apparently gained entry into the house by clawing through a screen on one of the windows.

The terrified wife ran back into the bedroom and alerted her husband, who grabbed his shotgun, loaded it, and entered the kitchen. The quick-thinking husband, who is a hunter, readied his shotgun and then shot the bear when it began walking toward him. …
