Americans United in Action! Staff Members and Activists Support Church-State Separation

The past few weeks have been busy ones for Americans United staff and chapter activists in defense of separation of church and state.

Here is a roundup of some recent activities:

Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, traveled to Denver Sept. 30 where he did a book signing for his new book God And Government at the Tattered Cover bookstore. From there, Lynn went to Santa Fe, N.M., for an Oct. 3 panel discussion on church-state issues at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. Other speakers on the panel included the Rev. Welton Gaddy, president emeritus of the Interfaith Alliance; Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and noted civil rights attorney Pedro L. Irigonegaray. Actor Mike Farrell, best known for his portrayal of Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on

the iconic television show "M*A*S*H," moderated the event.

Director of Communications Rob Boston appeared on RT's "Thom Hartmann Show" Sept. 24 to discuss Pope Francis' visit. On Oct. 23, Boston gave a talk about church-state relations to residents of Ingleside at Rock Creek, a retirement community in Washington, D.C.

On Sept. 21, Greg Lipper, senior litigation counsel, took part in a debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The event, titled "American Faith: The Origin and Meaning of Religious Liberty," featured two panels with speakers representing a variety of viewpoints. Lipper appeared on the second panel to discuss the limits of religious liberty alongside Kristina Arriaga, executive director of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty; David French, formerly of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and Robin Fretwell Wilson, director of the Family Law and Policy Program of the University of Illinois' College of Law. Lipper also spoke to the Lehigh Valley Humanists in Allentown, Pa., Oct. 4.
