This is really a guide about impact factors and the search to find more meaningful ways to measure the impact of an article, a journal, a book, an author, a department, or an entire organization. With the explosion of electronic media, a variety of tools have emerged to help librarians, scholars, and administrators determine and define impact. This book is a guide to some of those new tools and takes a holistic look at impact.

Both authors are experienced librarians. Roemer is the instructional design and outreach services librarian at the University of Washington Libraries. Borchardt is the science librarian at American University. Having done considerable research into bibliometrics and altmetrics, they share that knowledge in this book in a clear and practical way. Their goal is to help you, as a librarian, teach faculty and others about new ways to determine their own impact.

The book contains eight chapters divided into four parts: Impact, Bibliometrics, Altmetrics, and Special Topics. The first part simply discusses four levels of impact using more current terms: 1) individual scholarly contributions (think articles); 2) venues of production (journals); 3) individual authors; and 4) groups and institutions.
