Bereavement is always tricky to address with the very young. I'm not sure if there even is a right way--we tend to agree that everyone grieves differently, so we know that a book that may be right for one child may not be for another. Having said all that, Grandad's Island is a gentle introduction to the concept that sometimes the people we love go away forever.

Syd lives so near to his Grandad's house that he can run there on his own and let himself in. They are clearly very close. One day when he gets there, Grandad is in the attic and when Syd joins him they go together through a magical doorway onto the deck of a great ship. Grandad steers a course to a beautiful tropical island where they discover an old shack. Working together they get it all shipshape, and soon it is time for Grandad to break the news that he won't be returning with Syd. …
