This is a collection of fairy and folk tales linked by the common theme of shoes or boots. Many of them are predictable--Charles Perrault's Puss in Boots, Hans Andersen's The Red Shoes, Cinderella (in its Russian form as The Story of Chemoushka). Some are unpredictable; the story of Perseus and the Gorgon's head is included because he wore Hermes' winged sandals. Brer Rabbit and Mr Dog is included (and is as inaccessible as ever to anyone taught to read by the look-and-say method).

The stories are presented in very readable translations closely following the originals. Some will surprise those more familiar with pantomime versions. Hop o' My Thumb is there because he wore seven league boots, but Perrault's version also includes the babes in the wood motif, with the greedy crumb-eating birds, and the children arrive at an ogre's castle, not a witch's gingerbread house. …
