Who Are You, and What Are You Worth? New Research Takes a Closer Look at the Compensation and Benefits of Talent Development Professionals

The good news is that the national unemployment rate in the United States is now around 5 percent (5.1 percent in September 2015). The bad news is, if you're a talent development professional, the low unemployment rate probably doesn't mean your company is compensating you better in an effort to retain your expertise.

The recent Association for Talent Development study, What Does Talent Development Pay: ATD's 2015 Compensation and Benefits Report, took a deep dive into the demographics of talent development professionals and their salary and other compensation levels.

Given that talent development professionals are responsible for helping to build the knowledge, skills, and abilities of others, it should come as no great surprise that they themselves are well-educated.

An impressive 44 percent of study participants have earned a master's degree, with another 5 percent having attained an advanced degree. Additionally, talent development professionals have expanded their knowledge set outside of acquiring a formal degree, to obtain credentials or certifications. Nearly 75 percent of respondents hold at least one credential or certification.

About 68 percent of study participants are female. And some 75 percent of respondents have at least six years of experience in the profession, a statistic that echoes a 2011 study conducted by the ASTD and the Institute for Corporate Productivity, which examined the profession.

So with this wealth of knowledge and experience, what are the core functional roles of talent development professionals, and in what environment do they ply their trade? …
