WHAT IS EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT? THE NATIONAL ASSOCIation of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) in its report, The State of Career Technical Education: Employer Engagement in CTE, defines it as the collaboration between career and technical education (CTE) and employers. While this idea sounds simple, collaborations of this nature can have a big impact on the development of CTE programs that benefit both students and our national workforce.

Business and industry have been linked to CTE since its inception. However, as employers are struggling to fill available positions in growing fields due to a lack of qualified applicants--often referred to as the "skills gap"--these linkages are more vital than ever. This challenge has increased the demand for CTE-trained students coming out of secondary and postsecondary CTE programs, and it makes employer engagement even more important By preparing students for college and career success, CTE can help close that gap and prepare a strong, adaptable workforce.

By providing skills training that covers the entire career spectrum, CTE programs equip students with the employability and technical skills they will need in order to be successful in their chosen career. Additionally, these programs integrate academics to help students solve real-world problems. Furthermore, CTE students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in high-skill jobs.
