Two of the most creative and imaginative authors to come out of Ireland have finally produced a book together! Eoin has talked about learning from Oliver how to tell a story with pictures and that this idea he had about an imaginary friend just did not work with words alone. Imaginary friends do seem to be having a bit of a literary 'moment' but I particularly like this idea that the invisible friends like Fred are very real in their own world, drifting about on clouds until needed by a child somewhere. They do their job until their child finds a real child to be friends with and then they fade and fade until a wind blows the remaining wisp of them back to a handy cloud. We really empathise with Fred's yearning to find a child who will want him to stay but who could predict that when his child finds a friend, she has an invisible friend too? …
