The thing is, we re talking about a movie about a mop. So the fact that much of Joy is agonizingly slow should come as no surprise. What is surprising, however, is the great deal of talent poured into the telling of Joy Mangano's life story. Mangano, played with natural pluck by Jennifer Lawrence, is the woman who invented the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. The film, loosely based on Mangano's life, documents her struggles before reaching wild success on QVC and HSN in the late 1980s and early '90s.

The film is similar to Erin Brockovich in that both tell the story of attractive single moms who struggle to survive in the hardscrabble place they are clearly better than. Both films draw out the misery of the women's daily existence. Time, children, and failed romances beat them down.

But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the inevitable pull-myself-up-by-the-bootstrap moment! …
