Quebec's Karina Gauvin displayed her long Baroque experience as Handel's Alcina at the Teatro Real last fall. The opera had never been seen at the Madrid theatre before so a singer of such renown and personality was a real bonus for the audience. Towards the end of the Act I, Gauvin sat on the edge of the stage in a daring evening gown and sang a most lyrical "Si, son quella, non piu bella." She was at her best here, her despair at being abandoned by her lover, Ruggiero, was truly soulful. In the moments of recitativo, the Canadian dominated with ease as well. Beside Gauvin was a superlative Christine Rice as Ruggiero. A voice of contrasts and most beautiful expression, her "Verdi prati, selve amene" was a highpoint of the evening. The rest of the cast included: Anna Christy as Morgana, a cheeky actress with grating high notes; Sonia Prina as Bradamante, her coloratura often laborious; and Erika Escriba as a sincere Oberto. The men gave credible performances--Luca Tittoto as Melisso and Allan Clayton as Oronte. …
