BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

Directed by Zack Snyder (Warner Bros., 2016)

As one of the first blockbuster films of the year, Batman v Superman is Warner Bros.' attempt to launch a DC Comics cinematic universe. Director Zack Snyder's convoluted storytelling and absurd attempts at "deeper thoughts" overshadow what could have been a fantastic movie.

After the events of Man of Steel, the world is split over the question of Superman. Most see him as a savior; some, including Bruce Wayne/Batman, see him as an alien threat that must be kept in check, if not eliminated. The two are destined to clash, egged on by the supervillain Lex Luthor, who sneers pseudophilosophy while pushing the heroes to clash.

As someone who has loved Batman and Superman since I was a kid, I really wanted to like this movie. There are some bright spots. Gal Gadot's elegant Wonder Woman has me eager for her standalone film and Ben Affleck nails the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman (contrary to predictions). …
