When I retrieved your March/April 2016 issue out of my mailbox, with the major headline being "The Truth About Guns," I was looking forward to some articles of your usual high quality by people who were both conservative in approach and well versed in this very important topic. Perhaps, I thought, you would have authors of the caliber of John Lott for the present situation, with a suitable array of statistical evidence, and Roger McGrath for the historical background. I was swiftly disabused of my hopes.

Regarding Mr. Mumford's article ["What's Pro-Life About an AR-15?"], there is no incompatibility between ownership of an AR-15 rifle and being pro-life. Surprisingly, he never once mentions innocence in his diatribe. A child in the womb is the very picture of innocence. A person, once born, who assaults me or my loved ones is an aggressor and is not in any way innocent. Apparently Mr. Mumford does not value life enough to defend his own or those of his loved ones.

Mr. Mumford makes light of self-defense, but the historical record clearly shows that his dichotomy between liberty and life is not really true. …
