Annual Meeting Offers Insights from Leaders in Public Health: Cecile Richards Keynotes Opening Session

WITH APHA'S 2016 Annual Meeting and Expo just a few months away, it is the perfect time to begin browsing through this year's hundreds of sessions and events.

The meeting, which will convene Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in Denver, will officially kick off with the opening session on Sunday, Oct. 30, and feature keynote speaker Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Underscoring this year's Annual Meeting theme of "Creating the Healthiest Nation: Ensuring the Right to Health," Richards will discuss her organization's role in protecting access to care for all, especially among vulnerable and underserved populations. The opening session will also feature other leaders in U.S. and local public health.

Exciting speakers are also lined up for the Annual Meeting's other general sessions. Attendees at Monday's general session, "The CDC: Disease Detectives to the World," will hear from past and current directors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Panelists will include Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, the agency's current director, as well as former directors Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH; Jeffrey Koplan, MD, MPH; and David Satcher, MD, PhD, who also served as U.S. surgeon general.

The meeting's closing session on Wednesday, Nov. 2, will focus on how ensuring the right to health will bring the U.S. closer to becoming the healthiest nation. Closing session speakers will include Edward Ehlinger, MD, MSPH, president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and health commissioner for the state of Minnesota; Claude-Alix Jacob, MPH, incoming president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials and chief public health officer at the Cambridge Public Health Department in Massachusetts; and APHA President Camara Jones, MD, PhD, MPH. …
