INDONESIA More than 2,000 plastic ice-cream containers were recycled into the facade of the Taman Bima Microlibrary in Bandung. Designed by the architects at SHAU Bandung, the 1,700-square-foot structure was built above an existing stage, protecting the platform-used by the community for gatherings and events--from rain and sun. The plastic-and-steel building was designed to be an easily accessible space for reading and learning.

ISRAEL The town of Lakiya, made up of one-story buildings and narrow streets, is in the heart of the Negev region. Three times a week, volunteers working with the local Association for the Improvement of Women's Status load up a cargo truck with books in Arabic, Hebrew, and English.
