Remodeled and restored, an "art village' at Mills College

A new "art village' has appeared on theMills College campus in Oakland. Restored and remodeled, the handsome old Spanish colonial revival gallery and adjacent portico now act as a grand entrance to an entire complex of new studios, plazas, courtyards, and gardens. From January 25 through March 8, you can take in a major exhibition of work by Mills College graduates as you check out the improvements at the Jane Baerwald Aron Art Center.

Though the addition is bigger than theoriginal structure, San Francisco architects Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis kept thier building subordinate, forming a backdrop to the more elaborately ornamented original building designed by Walter H. Ratcliff.

It's obvious the architects looked carefullyat Ratcliff's building for visual cues to the organization of their own structure: they repeated such motifs as tile roofs and simple soaring arches (now used to define two walkways) and lined up new paths and passages with existing ones. …
