I like what Archbishop Blase Cupich says about the need for sane gun laws and reasonable restrictions on who can possess firearms ("Mission, not maintenance," Expert Witness, October). This is quite an explosive issue in U.S. politics, so I applaud the archbishop for his fortitude in publicly declaring that the church needs to take such a position.

I hope and pray a plan is developed to present this position to local government boards and state legislatures to make it well-known that the church sees gun violence as a crisis that needs to be addressed.

I agree that violence is an issue in which the church should be invested. We should be teaching peacemaking skills in our schools and parishes. Our family life programs should be helping families to develop workable problem-solving skills.

The work of our schools and adult education programs should be driven by justice. We need to help people see the racism and sexism we help perpetuate and develop the skills and practices to create realistic alternatives to violence. …
