Reading only a quick plot summary, one could be forgiven for thinking The Fits is a horror movie: New girl shows up, new girl doesn't quite fit in, frightening and unexplainable things happen. Instead, director Anna Rose Holmer's debut film offers an incisive portrait of a group of adolescent girls' ambivalence about growing up and belonging.

The film follows Toni (Royalty Hightower), an 11-year-old tomboy who works alongside her brother, Jermaine (Da'Sean Minor), as he cleans a rec center after school in inner-city Cincinnati. A skilled athlete training as a boxer under Jermaine's tutelage, Toni is enchanted with the award-winning all-girls' dance team that practices in the same building. Leaving boxing aside, she decides to join the team. Shy to change in front of the others, but also giddy to try on the sequin-spangled dance costumes, Toni haltingly navigates this unfamiliar girl world. …
