Communication between RGS-IBG members and the Society is key to its ongoing success. 1996 saw the first of its five-year strategies take place, mapping out the future of both the RGS-IBG and the advancement of geographical science. Ideas were sought from all over on how best to shape the path to be followed and over the past 20 years, with three further five-year plans completed, the rewards for such efforts are in full effect with a thriving establishment, a committed and engaged membership, and a larger presence in wider society than ever before. On page 78 this month, the Society's director, Dr Rita Gardner, outlines her ambitions for the fourth such strategy. With the myriad challenges facing the world today, it's never been more important to make your thoughts and opinions be known, something Dr Gardner is keen to encourage.

Equally, Geographical has evolved over the past 20 years (and beyond). While the magazine's core mission has never wavered, our methods for creating and presenting content has constantly adapted to the changes in technology and publishing trends. …
