In my experience, the most important thing to understand about a crisis is that people are involved," Tibbo writes at the beginning of Leadership in the Eye of the Storm. It becomes a thesis for his book-when a leader finds himself in charge of managing a crisis, he will succeed if the human element is properly considered. An organization that makes the emotional, psychological, and social needs of its employees a priority during a tough time is an organization that will excel, the author writes.

Tibbo, who has decades of experience leading post-disaster teams (including one following the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11), draws from his career to tell stories of companies that have dealt with crisis. These range from his experiences following 9/11 to the reaction of a midsized manufacturing company plunged into a difficult situation after an employee it fired committed suicide. In that example, management neglected to put out any communication following the tragedy, leading to a culture of distrust. Tibbo consulted with the company, advising its leaders to talk to people one-on-one, hold meetings preshift, and open up lines of communication between the leadership and employees. At the highest level, the idea was to help the organization connect with its workers to let them heal.
