A pier full of gardens April 8-12 in San Francisco

For gardeners, this month's big event isthe San Francisco Landscape Garden Show. Held at Pier 3 at Fort Mason Center, the show presents an impressive array of mini-landscapes in a 65,000-square-foot (1 1/2-acre) enclosed space. Hours are 10 to 6 daily, April 8 through 12, with extended hours (to 9) on Thursday and Friday, April 9 and 10.

You'll see 35 "idea' gardens designed bytop landscape professionals, plus informational exhibits by 40 horticultural and plant organizations.

The gardens, using living plant material,display a wide variety of styles. In many of them, benches, foundations, fences, or other furnishings complete the scene.

New this year is a gallery displayingphotographs of other projects developed by landscape designers.

Daily at 3, you can join a docent-led tourof the show. On the hour between 11 and 3 (and also at 7 on Thursday and Friday), watch gardening demonstrations. A cafe will offer snacks daily, light dinners Thursday and Friday. …
