MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Lee Chandler is the guy who deals with other people's waste. When we first meet Lee, the somber protagonist portrayed by Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, it's to follow him through his drudgery-filled days as the maintenance man for a slew of apartments near Boston. He doesn't make an effort to reciprocate a tenant's friendly overture; his demeanor is only roused from its torpor by a combative tenant who tries his patience and by two men at the local bar who look at him too long. But his explosions are sudden and short-lived.

His stupor isn't shaken when he receives the phone call that plants him immediately in his Jeep on the road back home to picturesque Manchester-by-the-Sea, a fishing community on the shores of Massachusetts Bay. In flashbacks we learn that Lee's older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler, of Friday Night Lights fame)--whose sudden death revealed in that phone call pulls Lee back home--had a serious heart condition, an unstable wife (Gretchen Mol), and a smart, resilient young son named Patrick (Lucas Hedges). …
