Lincoln was shot at about ten in the evening, years Ago on Good Friday. Three men carried him down A staircase, and across a street, and into a boarding House. Imagine carrying a man six foot four across A busy street. Did they have to wait for the traffic? And what about the men who carried the other man Into His tomb? This man was shorter, five foot four Maybe, but He was bleeding too. Lincoln was taller Than the bed in which they laid him. Neither stayed Where he'd been put. How is a terrible death a good Thing? Father Dennis said that His death was how it All began, the resurrection, the hinge of history; that Was the requisite darkness, he said. I remember how He savored the words as he said them.
