STATION TO STATION

By Gary Jansen (Loyola Press, 2017)

In his fifth book, Gary Jansen walks readers through the stations of the cross, using personal experiences to build bridges to Jesus' suffering. Beyond the personal stories Jansen tells of his grandmother's death, a colleague's betrayal, and other relatable tales, he weaves in pop culture references in the form of quotes from the late David Bowie and literary genius Cormac McCarthy.

The book serves as a how-to guide for those without much experience in the practice of praying through the stations of the cross. Jansen begins by listing each station, what it means for Jesus' final journey, and what it means for those praying through the stations. At each chapter's end, Jansen invites the reader to carefully reflect on scripture passages by asking poignant questions. He then paints a scene, imagining what each station might have been like for the suffering Jesus.

What Jansen does best is help the reader to practice Ignatian spirituality, using the stations of the cross and personal reflection to gain a deeper understanding and relationship with God. …
