An Advocate for Microlearning: Ozge Otmanboluk Does Not Shy Away from New Technology

After receiving her master's degree in labor economics from Istanbul University in 2007, Ozge Otmanboluk began working for QNB Finansbank. She started as an HR recruitment assistant supervisor and her umbrella has since grown to include such topics as career management, organizational development, leadership development, coaching, and culture transformation. Now the company's L&D manager, Otmanboluk has become a supporter of microlearning in the finance industry.

HOW HAS THE TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROFESSION CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED WORKING?

Today people see their careers as journeys. The training department's role is to accompany them throughout this process. Once used to address overall groups, talent development has a personalized nature today. Employees have individual needs that put them at the wheel, and it's our job to change our practices and processes accordingly.

We have an example of this at QNB Finansbank. Three in four of our employees are from Generation Y, and we wish to know them better. Therefore, we conduct surveys to find out what they want in terms of development. This approach led to the birth of our Career Architecture program, which won a 2014 ATD Excellence in Practice Award.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR TALENT DEVELOPMENT IN THE FINANCE INDUSTRY?

It's the insufficiency of the pre-career education system. Sadly, schools don't prepare students for business life. They don't teach individuals to become self-aware through competence-based support, which applies to nearly all industries.
