Meet MTNA President Scott Mcbride Smith

Scott McBride Smith, NCTM, will serve as MTNA President for the 2017-2019 biennium. Smith previously was president of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers and a member of the Music Teachers National Association Board of Directors. He is a visionary leader in music education.

How does it feel to be the new president of MTNA?

I'm honored, a bit nervous and excited about the prospects I see ahead.

What inspired you to strive for the position of MTNA president?

I think we are living in an environment where the role of music teachers is changing. I'd like to see us maintain the best of our traditions as we adapt to new ideas--and I want to be part of that process.

What would you like to see MTNA accomplish during your presidency?

Maintain our outstanding member services, expand some of our existing programs and grow our membership.

How did you first become involved with MTNA?

I joined in the 1980s. I was starting my career, and I wanted to take advantages of the many MTNA-sponsored opportunities for my students to perform, and for me to learn.

What has kept you involved with MTNA throughout your career?

The same reasons that lead me to become a member in the first place: the outstanding student opportunities and the options for self-learning.

What led you to teaching piano and piano pedagogy?

Biology? I am the oldest of four children, with three younger sisters for whom I was responsible. I guess it was a natural transition to want to help young people outside of my family. …
