A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

Season 1 (Netflix, 2017)

The recommendation in the haunting opening song of A Series of Unfortunate Events is that we look away. "Look away," croons lead actor and musical theater virtuoso Neil Patrick Harris. "This show will wreck your evening, your whole life, and your day." And yet, much like it is hard not to look at a car accident, as viewers of this latest Netflix series we cannot pull our eyes off the sad tale of the orphaned Baudelaire children.

This is a show for people who like dark, uncomfortable questions. But even those of us who like those questions want a soft landing, and this series promises we won't get one. It is The Addams Family without all the giddy joy and cara mia hand kissing. It is The Royal Tenenbaums without noble characters and redemptive turns of fate. As warned by narrator Lemony Snicket, played by Patrick Warburton with perfectly wry dismay, there is no happy ending for the three Baudelaire children after their parents and estate burn in flames in the opening scene. …
