THE SACRED FIRE

I finished Sacred Fire: A Vision for a Deeper Human and Christian Maturity in the middle of the night while rocking a sick baby. Feeling sick and exhausted myself, overwhelmed by my responsibilities to my family, my home, and my work, Rolheiser's book was written precisely for someone in my state.

This is a follow-up to Rolheiser's earlier introduction to spirituality, The Holy Longing. This subsequent text is intended for a more mature audience, one that has mostly moved beyond questions of identity and belonging and is now seeking how to live a life more centered on others.

Rolheiser writes poignantly and honestly about the challenges of this stage of life: boredom, resentments of duties, expectations, loneliness, and crushing disappointments as life reveals itself to be something different than the fiery dreams of youth. Despite these trials he reminds the reader that the years of working, caring, and being in charge can be the best years of our lives if we accept the invitation to a deeper maturity and discipleship. …
