I always feel slightly sad when a new topic is put on the curriculum because of the pressure which will be put on authors and illustrators to produce something 'to tie in with the topic.'

In this case, my pessimism was unfounded. Both the title and front cover are very amusing and the cave paintings are excellent. I found the illustrations to be clear and simple and the various materials Pod uses is an excellent introduction to technology and the uses we make of these materials.

Pod is struggling to cope with the cold of the Stone Age and he wants something to keep his bottom warm while he's running and playing with his friends. Children always giggle when bottoms and underwear are mentioned so their attention is grabbed straight away. He tries using the materials around him to make a pair of underpants and finds they all have drawbacks; the scene where termites eat his wooden pants is hilarious. …
