Raw, classic, heartbroken, and hard-livin' country has certainly made a resurgence in recent years. Leading this perhaps unexpected resurgence are distinctive voices such as Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton. Having previously led the bluegrass-leaning band The SteelDrivers and cowritten many country hits for other country artists, debut album Traveller finally brought Stapleton his due with numerous accolades--including the Grammy award for best country album. His stunning rendition of George Jones' classic "Tennessee Whiskey" hinted at great things to come. His recent follow-up album From A Room: Volume 1 makes due on that promise.

The album sees Stapleton stepping fully into his own. The music is more pared down and confident. The styles of the songs are more varied. If he wants to play a rollicking syncopated number on his electric guitar he does so with swagger, as on the infectious "Second One to Know. …
