Many people who come to McMinnville immediately hit the road, seeking out wine in the surrounding hills. But these days, you hardly need to leave city limits to experience the riches of the Willamette Valley. Downtown, you'll find 19th-century brick buildings housing art galleries and indie shops. Come fall, head to the Granary District for a behind-the-scenes peek at the grape harvest, as trucks of ripe fruit roll in and winemakers hustle from barrel room to coffee shop and back. Add to that the peak of wild mushroom season-a favorite time of year for Oregon's chefs-and you've got a feast for the senses in one idyllic spot.

10 A.M. Start your day southwest of town on State 18, where you'll pass by fruit orchards and farmstands. Duck into Bernards Farm (bernardsfarm. com) to sip fresh-pressed apple cider in the 100-year-old barn, then head a mile south to One Fork Farm Caramels (onefork farm.com). Their sweets make use of fresh butter and cream from Willamette Valley dairies.

11 A.M. How about some nonedible art? Next door, Dan Wheeler shows his hand-thrown porcelain bowls and vases at Fire's Eye Pottery (facebook.com/ fireseyepottery), and a few steps away, the Lawrence Gallery (lawrence gallery.net) mixes contemporary Northwest pieces with masters like Dali and Chagall.

12 P.M. Back in town, stroll along leafy, shop-lined Third Street, where Yamhill Valley Dry Goods (yamhill valleydrygoods.com) stocks on-trend clothing and accessories, as well as home goods like Woolrich blankets.
