Kristin Draucker spent almost a full decade freelancing in New York City before joining the Paul Taylor Dance Company in January of 2017. Nearly a year into her tenure, she seems to have adjusted well. Her light jump and clean, quick footwork shine in works like Esplanade and Company B.

But what makes even more of an impression is the emotional honesty and openness with which she approaches her dancing.

Training: Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and The Ailey School

First Taylor class: A regular at Wilhelm Burmann's ballet class at Steps on Broadway, one day Draucker decided to branch out. "I remember taking my very first class at Taylor," she says. "I remember loving the drums and the combinations across the floor, all that running and jumping. It's so athletic and the energy in the room is so positive."

Discovering modern dance: Though she went to CPYB, Draucker was always interested in all kinds of dance. "I remember someone teaching me a Graham exercise once, and I thought, This is amazing. It was more in line with the way my body naturally moved."

Auditioning for Paul Taylor: After nearly a decade of freelancing, Draucker auditioned for the company. "You start by just walking across the floor, which is really exposing. You really have to know who you are, or else be a very good liar. Then you do all these bits of repertory. I finished a combination in this triumphant pose right in front of Paul with this massive smile on my face. …
