Many Americans acquire their dog from a shelter. The pet specialists at Ask.Vet--a Silicon Valley startup that offers live text conversations with licensed veterinarians--say adopting a shelter dog is trickier than it seems, and pet owners should not take it lightly.

Here are five issues pet owners can run into with their new canine: Not putting yourself in your dog's paws. You might think you dog-proofed your home but, if you do not actually crawl around on the ground, you might have missed key hazards like stray electrical cords, slippery rugs, or dangerous chemicals.
