An innovative variation on the book format, full of interest and ideas. Imagine a wordless frieze, joined at the ends to form a circle of pages. The outside, in Jolivet's distinctive black and white lino-cut illustrations with a touch of rich, deep cyan for the sea, depicts a day and night in the life of the beach and its community in Chennai, South India. On the inside is an undersea world full of swimming creatures.

As a result, the 'book' can be 'read' in many ways. You can turn the leaves like a traditional book, use it flat like a frieze, set it up as a star or revolve it in a circle. You can even sit in the middle and have the underwater seascape travel around you. The book comes in a folder which explains how Jolivet wanted to capture the liveliness of the scene, which contrasted with her experience of beaches at home in France. …
