I TYPICALLY DON'T ENJOY TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUE CONTENTS HERE. I feel like, "Hey, you've got the thing in your hands, so you probably don't need me blathering on about the absolute obviousness of what you're about to read."

But this issue is a bit different, because it's a major revamp for us, and you may want to know why we did it, and how the coming year will unfold.

The challenge for all print publications is maintaining relevancy and support throughout its audience of readers and advertisers, as well as seeking to bring new fans into the community. If you're a long-term member of the GP family, you've noticed this exercise from time to time, because the editors and I are always retooling elements to make the magazine a more useful component of your guitar life. Some revamps are subtle. This one--not so much.

First, we wanted to redesign the cover so that it showcased a refreshed editorial season in 2018. We wanted something clean, stark, impactful, and modern. Our art director, Paul Haggard, really hit a home run, a touchdown, a hat trick--insert whatever sports phrase you dig here--because I feel his new design is compelling and seductive and righteous. I am thrilled to have Paul's vision kick off the revamped Guitar Player for its 51st year of existence.

Then, there's the question of how we share guitar data this year. We realize we are limited in our outreach, because we aren't a "wide-interest" publication, such as People or even Rolling Stone. We are designed for serious and obsessed guitar players, and, as a result, our content is laser focused on intermediates and experts. We can't publish the equivalent of happy cuddly puppy shots to delight beginning guitarists and musical dilettantes. The data side of the relationship with our audience requires us to produce meaningful and practical content on playing better and sounding better. …
