FLOATING IN THE SEA OF CORTEZ without mobile service or Wi-Fi: not a bad way to start off a year, sort out your thoughts, or surrender to a life-changing adventure. It was January 1, and I was on the four-day Base Camp Baja voyage on the National Geographic Sea Bird with Lind-blad Expeditions-National Geographic (expeditions.com). For outdoor adrenaline junkies like me, this small-ship cruise itinerary along Mexico's Baja California peninsula was pure heaven--mornings began with an intense 6:30 a.m. group fitness session on the deck before my fellow passengers and I boarded Zodiacs to snorkel with sea lions off Los Islotes, learn paddleboard yoga (confession: I sucked) on Bahia Bonanza, and hike through the cactus-studded, boulder-strewn arroyo of Isla Partida (see image at left). The days flew by in a rush of epic experiences. But for me the most memorable part of that trip was the sense of tantalizing isolation, of feeling distinctly unmoored in a way that was both exhilarating and unsettling. …
