Margo Price (Third Man Records, 2017)

In November 2016 many rural Americans finally did something so wild that the outside world started paying attention. They elected Donald Trump, and pundits have since been burning up the cybersphere trying to figure out what provoked this senseless act of ballot box terrorism.

The pundits' task would be a lot easier if they listened to Margo Price.

A daughter of Aledo, Illinois, Price has now made two albums filled with classic honky-tonk country sounds and lyrics rooted in her own experience of growing up among Trump's "forgotten people." Both albums revolve around the same historic touchstone in Price's family story, and it wasn't the 2008 financial crash. It was the bank foreclosure of the family farm, an event that happened in 1986, when Price was only 3 years old.

During the farm crisis of the Reagan '80s, almost 300,000 farms disappeared. A way of life was lost, and the wound has never healed. …
