Susan Phillis has been named chief of Brooklyn (New York) Public Library's Business Library. Phillis was assistant director of corporate research and development at American International Group, Inc. Prior to that, she was a vice president of business insurance broker Marsh & McLennan, and manager of its Corporate Information Center.

Phillis holds a master's degree in library science from Columbia University. An active member of the Special Libraries Association, she received the Frances R. Cox Award for Service from its Insurance and Employee Benefits Division. She is also a member of the Academy of Women Archivers of the WYCA of the City of New York.

Gale Research has announced that it has named Ben Mondloch executive vice president of sales, marketing, and new business development; Peter Simon vice president of electronic publishing; and Beverly Smith senior director of electronic products.

Mondloch was formerly senior vice president of sales and marketing of the education and academic division of UMI. During his 5-year tenure at UMI, he also held the positions of product manager, director of educational marketing, and director of educational sales and marketing. Prior to joining UMI, he was a product manager at NewsBank.

Simon is a 23-year veteran of the Reed Elsevier Group, working in key management positions in several of its publishing units, including his most recent position of vice president for business development at LEXIS-NEXIS. He began at R.R. Bowker as an editor, working his way up to publisher and business manager of the company in 1996. He was also the executive vice president of business development and database publishing of Reed Reference Publishing.

Smith comes to Gale from Thomson Consulting, where she managed the Thomson Electronic Information Resources (TEIR) online development group. While at Thomson, she held positions as development manager for electronic commerce services and later as director of product development. Prior to Thomson, she was a program manager with SAIC. The Library Corporation (TLC) has announced that Gary W. Kirk has been named vice president. In this new post, Kirk will assume expanded managerial and strategic planning responsibilities, while continuing his current duties as director of sales and marketing.

Kirk joined TLC in 1986. According to the announcement, during his tenure as general manager, TLC approximately doubled in size every 3 months from 1986 to 1990. He was named regional sales manager in 1990, national sales manager in 1993, then director of sales and marketing in 1996.

Kirk attended Georgia State University and Auburn University, majoring in business administration.

Auto-Graphics, Inc. has announced the appointment of David W. Bates as national sales manager. Bates brings to his new position more than 20 years of applicable experience on both the vendor and the client sides. He was most recently national sales director at Ameritech Library Services. Earlier he was a marketing representative at OCLC. Bates began his career as director of the North Adams Public Library in Massachusetts. In 1980 he moved to the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System as regional services coordinator responsible for interlibrary loan coordination, consulting services to 110 member libraries, and implementation of an automated library system.

Bates received a master's degree in library science from the University of South Florida.

In other Auto-Graphics news, A-G Canada, Ltd. has announced that Nancy J. Hamilton has joined the company as library systems consultant to customers in the province of Ontario. She will be responsible for consulting, sales, and implementation support for libraries and library consortia.

Hamilton was most recently an account representative for Carswell Thomson Publishing, and was recognized as the Legal Account Representative of the Year in 1997. …
