Like any ten-year-old who has revelled in Abi Elphinstone's previous books, I leapt straight in missing the author introduction just inside the front cover and skipping over the Prologue. As I read swiftly on, some memories were triggered of fairy stories, the Snow Queen, the white witch who rules Narnia with her magic and of course Abi's own Dream Snatcher trilogy where a strong and resourceful girl prevails against evil magic. This new story has great pace, evil forces, people trapped by magic in Winterfang Palace who must be freed, tension between people who need to work together, magical beasts that will come to your rescue. Then I read the author's preface and found that some of my impressions at least had been right. But this author creates worlds that are entirely her own, recognisable from the first page albeit sometimes more Alex Rider than Harry Potter. …
