Beyond the reach of Sacramento's eastern suburbs, Auburn has long been a folksy foothills enclave where kids pan for gold and grown-ups rummage through dusty antiques. Continuing to embrace its 19th-century origins, the town's saloons and blacksmith shop look much like they would have in the 1860s. But behind many vintage facades you'll now find chic shops that wouldn't be out of place in San Francisco, selling housewares and sleek handmade jewelry. Speaking of jewelry, there's still gold--not much, but a little--in them there hills, and the supply store will happily hook you up with the right tools if the fever strikes.

10 A.M. Start with a cappuccino at The Pour Choice (thepourchoice.com) before exploring Old Town, and let the brass-accented interior put you in a vintage mind-set.

11 A.M. Head north on Sacramento Street to the core of historic Auburn, where the brick and wood buildings still bear faded inscriptions. Duck into Used Saddle Connection (usedsaddleconnection.com) to smell the leather and peruse ornate saddles, and try Echoes of Auburn (echoesofauburn.com) for up-cycled vintage goods, from repainted furniture to purses stitched from canvas tents.

1 P.M. Right in the middle of Old Town, Auburn Alehouse (auburnalehouse.com) serves up pints in a brick structure built way back in 1 855. Locals now flock here for pub fare like tacos and fried pickle chips.

2:30 P.M. To see just how far things have come, drive along High Street to reach the modern downtown area and head straight for Stella + Parker (stellaparkerrevival.com) on Lincoln Way. Imagine Ernest Hemingway's cabin with a hipster facelift: antlers, hand-knit sweaters, beard balm, camp-fire mugs, Pendleton blankets, and handmade tables. …
