Your greatest demo tape has a slim chance of landing a record deal if it doesn't get to the right music exec. As most musicians don't have the knowledge or desire to make this happen, consider hiring an agent to peddle your wares to the industry. An effective agent can successfully shop your tape by understanding your project, knowing which record labels are looking for which types of music, and--most importantly--by exploiting his or her industry contacts.

Not to be confused with a booking agent--whose job is to get you gigs--a shopping agent is authorized to represent you to the labels (and even negotiate certain deal points on your behalf). Agents come from a variety of backgrounds. Many music lawyers shop projects, and industry executives who are between jobs are often eager to shop new talent--sometimes using a hot act as leverage to get their next gig.
