* Ronald F. Thiemann, dean of Harvard University Divinity School since 1986, has announced that he is stepping down from the post effective January 1. "For nearly 13 years I have had the privilege of leading one of the most outstanding schools of theological education in the world," Thiemann, an ordained Lutheran minister, said in his letter of resignation. According to the letter, Thiemann plans to take a sabbatical, then return to the divinity school faculty and resume teaching and research.

* An Italian Roman Catholic known for her efforts to promote interreligious cooperation has been awarded a prestigious human rights prize by the 40-nation Council of Europe. Chiara Lubich, 78, the founder of the Focolare movement, shares the council's seventh human rights prize with two groups that monitor abuses by police and judicial authorities--Northern Ireland's Committee on the Administration of Justice and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey. Lubich is the first woman to win the prize.
