Start Smart Popular on Military Bases Worldwide

The U.S. Air Force, and Army have been using the START SMART Sports Development Program with overwhelming success on their bases worldwide.

Now the Marine Corps too.

The Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, North Carolina, became the first Marine base to conduct the START SMART program, which has become a fixture on more than 50 military bases across the world.

"Our first START SMART program was a huge success," said Joe Rosselli, youth sports coordinator at Cherry Point. "We are planning the next one to take place in January 1999."

START SMART provides children ages 3 and older the opportunity to learn and develop basic motor skills needed for successful participation in organized sports, while their parents participate right along with them.

Through the specially designed drills, which stress fun and learning, youngsters are able to gain enormous confidence in their abilities, which provides a smooth transition into the world of competitive sports.

"Seeing the program for the first time, I was truly impressed," Rosselli said. "The feedback from the parents was positive, and I'm looking forward to doing the next one."

Following in Cherry Point's footsteps, a START SMART program was also held at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia.
