Are the mainstream media perhaps a bit biased in their coverage of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal? In summing up the positions espoused, L. Brent Bozell III, chairman of the Media Research Center, or MRC, suggests strongly that the bias actually is blatant. He says we have "a morally bankrupt media which claim to care about truth, which claim to act as a watchdog over the integrity of government, now insisting that presidential perjury is an unserious issue that needs to be passed over, a partisan mudbath we should try to avoid for the good of the country."

No doubt the elites will dismiss this assessment as the negative nattering of another conservative nabob, but it would do to review the evidence. In his newsletter to MRC members, Bozell lines up a jam-packed "Rogue's Gallery" of some 22 elite media savants who have risen in defense of President Clinton. Some are content merely to observe of the scandal, as does Edie Magnus of MSNBC, that "it smells," while others, such as Nina Burleith of Time, view it as a call to action: "I think American women should be lining up with their presidential kneepads on to show their gratitude for keeping the theocracy off our backs. …
