LEXIS-NEXIS has announced that it has unveiled Intellectual Property Solutions, a comprehensive package of intellectual property files, case law, news, references, tools, and document delivery.

In separate announcements, LEXIS-NEXIS said that it signed an agreement with the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. Intellectual Property Solutions

LEXIS-NEXIS says intellectual Property' Solutions expands the company s traditional 11.5. patent offerings with the following

* Four products from thc European Patent Office

* Major search enhancements to the LEXIS-NEXIS archive of U.S. Patent Office and federal and state trademark files

* Official patent copy ordering from the REEDFAX service

* The addition of U.S. copyright registrations

"LEXIS-NEXIS has had a strong track record of delivering new and creative solutions for the intellectual property market since it first released full-text searchable U.S. patents online in 1982," said Tim Davies, chief operating officer of NEXIS information services. "Corporations continue to elevate the importance of managing intellectual assets well. In response, our Intellectual Property Solutions team has put together an exhaustive patent, trademark, and copyright information center with the most advanced search enhancements and supporting services to be found today."

Four new European Patent Office (EPO) files are searchable in English, German, or French, with the latter two containing English abstracts:

* The EPOPAT file contains European patent applications starting from 1986 and granted patents from 1991. Updated weekly, the file also has an exemplary drawing available for viewing.

* The International Patent Documentation Center (INPADOC) file is a bibliographic index of equivalent foreign patents from 55 counties and patenting organizations and legal status information from 22 countries.

* The EPO Board of Appeals Decisions (EPOBOA) file contains decisions from 1979 forward.

* The EPO classification system file organizes European patents by technology groups.

The addition of the U.S. copyright registrations library is particularly important to the media and entertainment markets to help protect copyrights and databases in a digital era. The library is composed of files of initial registrations and renewals of authors' copyrighted works; serial copyrights of successive issues. such as newspapers and periodicals; legal documents related to the ownership of works; and a group file of all three document types.

Users of LEXIS-NEXIS Intellectual Property Solutions now can order quality patent and trademark copies and other IP documentation from REEDFAX. REEDFAX has a fully automated retrieval system from which customers are able to order patent copies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Existing U.S. patent materials on LEXIS-NEXIS are further improved:

* The charges to retrieve images of U.S. patents are being eliminated, which will open up use of images to subscribers in various pricing plans. Combined with the availability of patent ordering from REEDFAX, users have total flexibility.

* Core terms, the keywords, and terms that describe technology in a patent, are being added to U.S. patents files on LEXIS-NEXIS. Core terms are extracted and shown in FULL and CITE displays, enhancing the abstracts already incorporated into the patent documents.
