For more than 20 years Calexico has made broadly accessible music that is too honest and eclectic to ever please the gods of the music industry. But, as this album shows, they're still out there trying to find out what a rock band can offer a world at the edge of disaster.

Founded by Californians, Calexico has operated from Tucson, Arizona since 1995. During those years, the original duo of Joey Burns and John Convertino has grown to a standing army of six (including two trumpeters), and their sound has evolved into a sort of indie rock-mariachi mashup.

However, on The Thread That Keeps Us most of the lyrics seem to revolve around the cataclysmic drought and unending fire that climate change is bringing to the Southwest. With that concern comes a hotter, drier electric guitar-driven sound and rock rhythms that hurtle forward instead of Latin music's characteristic slither and sway. …
