The John Butler Foundation, Inc. has been established to facilitate the acquisition and performance of Butler's choreography. Butler (1918-1993) was a ten-year veteran of the Martha Graham Dance Company from 1943 to 1953 and performed on Broadway in Oklahoma! He was dance director for Gian Carlo Menotti's Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, and created dances for New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Netherlands Dance Theater, Pennsylvania Ballet, and Harkness Ballet.

The foundation makes more than forty works available to professional companies, including After Eden (1966), Carmina Burana (1959), Medea (1975), Portrait of Billie (1960), and Sebastian (1963). Schedules permitting, available regisseurs are Larry Rhodes (artistic director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens), Wesley Fata, Masazumi Chaya, Sondra Sugai, Carmen de Lavallade, and Mary Hinkson.

Maina Gielgud announced December 9 that she will step down as artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet.... Martin Schlapfer, currently artistic director of Bern Ballet, will take over the artistic direction of Germany's Mainz Ballet in August.... Stuttgart Ballet has announced the appointment of Tadeusz Matacz as director of the John Cranko Ballet School.... Roland John Wiley was awarded the de la Torre Bueno Prize for his book The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov: Choreographer of The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, and special citations were given to Ellen Graft and Selma Jeanne Cohen at a ceremony in New York City last October. …
